Neji's demise was during the fourth incredible shinobi war curve. He passed on by the ten tails terminating various wood discharge shots (like lances), and the ten tails were in the control of Obito and Madara Uchiha. 

He forfeited his life for Hinata and Naruto (I don't have the foggiest idea why he didn't utilize pivot or air palms, most likely kicked the bucket due to the plot, since they were swift and such a large number of them, or because he was coming up short on chakra).
